Porto Moniz Natural Pools: Complete Visitor Guide

Porto Moniz is Madeira's most famous swimming spot, and for good reason. These volcanic rock pools on the island's northwest coast offer something you won't find anywhere else in Europe,a chance to swim in the Atlantic while waves crash dramatically just meters away, all within the safety of naturally formed lava pools.

The Two Pool Complexes

There are actually two separate pool areas in Porto Moniz, and most visitors don't realize this.

The Main Pools (Piscinas Naturais)

The larger, more famous complex is the one you see in all the photos. It costs €1.50 to enter (as of 2025) and includes:

  • Multiple interconnected pools at different depths
  • Changing rooms and showers
  • Lockers (small fee)
  • Lifeguards during summer
  • A small café

  • The entry fee isn't about profit,it funds maintenance. The pools require constant work because winter storms regularly damage the walls and pathways.

    The Free Pools (Cachalote Area)

Just a few hundred meters west, past the old fort, you'll find a second set of pools that are completely free. They're more natural, less infrastructure, more authentic volcanic formations. The trade-off is no facilities and no lifeguards. Locals often prefer these.

    Best Time to Visit

    For Calm Swimming:

  • Summer months (June-September)
  • Early morning (before 10am)
  • Weekdays beat weekends

  • For Drama:

  • Winter brings bigger waves
  • The pools are often closed for safety
  • But watching storms from the cafés is spectacular

  • Crowd Avoidance:

Our webcam shows you reality in real-time. Before driving the hour from Funchal, check the feed. If you see packed pools, wait an hour or come back tomorrow.

    What to Bring

    The basics that first-timers forget:

  • Water shoes: The volcanic rock is rough and can be slippery
  • Sunscreen: Even on cloudy days, the reflection off the black rock intensifies UV
  • Something warm for after: That Atlantic water is fresh even in summer (18-22°C)
  • Cash: The café and lockers don't always accept cards
  • A plastic bag: For wet swimwear on the drive back

  • The Drive

Getting to Porto Moniz is half the adventure. The coastal road (VE2/ER101) is one of Madeira's most scenic drives, winding along cliffs with ocean views. However:

  • It's slow (about 1-1.5 hours from Funchal)
  • Several tunnels,keep headlights on
  • Some narrow sections with oncoming traffic
  • Worth stopping at Seixal for coffee and their black sand beach

  • The faster route via São Vicente takes about 50 minutes but you miss the coastal views.

    Nearby Attractions

Since you're making the trip anyway:

  • Aquário da Madeira: Small but interesting aquarium in the old fort
  • Seixal: Quieter natural pools and a genuine black sand beach
  • Viewpoint above Porto Moniz: Spectacular for sunset
  • Chã da Ribeira: Traditional houses with thatched roofs

  • Our Honest Opinion

Porto Moniz is worth the trip at least once. The experience of swimming in volcanic pools while the Atlantic crashes nearby is genuinely unique. But be prepared for crowds in summer, this isn't a hidden gem anymore.

If you want the pools to yourself, consider Seixal instead (we have a webcam there too), or time your Porto Moniz visit for early morning or late afternoon.
